Economic indicators

Poland gained 42% higher GDP per capita thanks to EU membership
According to the Polish Economic Institute (PIE), Poland’s GDP per capita in 2024 was approximately 42% higher thanks to its membership in the European Union. The estimate is based on a counterfactual model comparing Poland’s actual development with a hypothetical scenario in which the country had never joined the EU. In that scenario, Poland’s real GDP would be around 30% lower and equivalent to the level recorded in 2015. The gains from EU membership range from 22% in the most pessimistic scenario to 61% in the most optimistic, with 42% as the average estimate. Source, Source
World Bank cuts Poland’s GDP growth forecast
The World Bank has slightly lowered its growth outlook for Poland, pointing to a more challenging economic environment. GDP growth for 2026 is now expected at 3.1% (down from 3.2%), and for 2027 at 2.6% (down from 2.9%). The revision reflects broader pressures affecting Central and Eastern Europe, including global trade uncertainty and slower recovery in the EU. Geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, are also adding to economic risks. Despite this, Poland remains one of the stronger performers in the region, supported by public investment and EU funds, which are expected to partly offset weaker consumption. Overall, the outlook suggests continued growth - but at a slightly slower pace than previously expected. To notice, World Bank's forecast is lower than consensus. Source
Polish inflation above EU average 2.8% in March 2026
According to the latest Eurostat data released on 16 April 2026, annual inflation in the euro area increased to 2.6% in March 2026, up from 1.9% in February. Inflation in the European Union as a whole rose to 2.8% in March, compared to 2.1% in the previous month.
The lowest inflation rates were recorded in Denmark (1.0%), Czechia, Cyprus, and Sweden (all at 1.5%).
The highest rates were seen in Romania (9.0%), Croatia (4.6%), and Lithuania (4.4%).

Poland’s foreign trade had slight declines at the start of 2026
Exports in euros amounted to EUR 58.7 billion, while imports reached EUR 58.8 billion (compared to January-February 2025, exports decreased by 0.9% and imports by 1.8%).
The trade balance was negative at EUR -0.1 billion (compared to a also negative balance of EUR -0.6 billion a year earlier). Source

Rising labour costs across the EU in 2025
Labour costs across the European Union continued to increase in 2025, highlighting ongoing pressure on businesses and labour markets. According to Eurostat, average hourly labour costs reached €34.9 in the EU and €38.2 in the euro area, marking annual increases of 4.1% and 3.8% respectively.
There are still major differences between countries. The lowest labour costs were recorded in Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, while the highest were in Luxembourg, Denmark and the Netherlands. The rise is driven by both wages and non-wage costs such as employers’ social contributions, which account for about a quarter of total labour costs on average in the EU.
Overall, the data shows a continued upward trend in labour costs across Europe, with particularly strong growth in Central and Eastern European countries, including Poland.

Layoffs on the rise in Poland: Construction and manufacturing under pressure
Companies in Poland are increasingly planning layoffs, particularly in the construction and manufacturing sectors. The slowdown in demand, rising costs, and ongoing economic uncertainty are pushing businesses to reduce employment.
Construction firms are affected by weaker investment activity and fewer new projects, while manufacturing companies face declining orders, especially from abroad. As a result, more employers are considering workforce reductions or have already begun the process.
At the same time, the labor market remains mixed - while some sectors are cutting jobs, others still report shortages of skilled workers. Overall, the outlook suggests a more cautious approach from companies in the coming months, with employment adjustments likely to continue.

Poland and Romania have the biggest budget deficits in the EU
New EU data shows that in 2024 Romania had a budget deficit of 9.3% of GDP, the biggest in the EU. Poland was second at 6.5%. The EU rule says countries should not go above 3%, so both countries are breaking it by a lot. Germany stayed just under 3% and followed the rules. Poland also added the most new debt in the EU in 2024. Both Poland and Romania must now fix their finances under EU supervision. Source, Source
Polish industrial output surges 9.4% YoY in March 2026 as German industry stagnates
Polish industrial output rose 9.4% year-on-year in March 2026 - nearly double market expectations of 4.2% and the strongest reading since the post-pandemic reopening in 2022 - according to GUS (Polish Central Statistical Office, 🇵🇱 PL). Growth was broad-based across 28 of 34 industrial sectors, led by transport equipment (+19.5%) and machinery repair (+35.3%). The result stands in sharp contrast to Germany, where almost all industrial segments continued to decline - with only pharmaceuticals and computer production posting growth. Poland is increasingly absorbing production capacity migrating from its western neighbor. Source, Source, Source, Source

A Polish Defence Ministry official has said that if Sweden’s final offer for new submarines under the Orka programme is not satisfactory, Poland will consider talks with other bidders. The statement refers to ongoing negotiations with Sweden for the purchase of A26-class submarines, which were previously selected as the preferred option. The deal is still under discussion, and key issues include delivery timelines, weapons systems, and operational capabilities. Mandatory reservist training may disrupt Polish transport companies in the coming months.
Carriers warn that call‑ups could remove up to 200,000 professional drivers from the market, deepening an already severe labour shortage. The West Pomeranian Association of Road Carriers (industry organisation, PL) says even short absences create high costs and operational delays. Employers receive no compensation, and companies fear decisions will be made without consultation. Training may also affect mechanics, technicians and logisticians - key roles across the TSL sector. Poland's public deficit exceeds pandemic-era levels - fiscal warning grows
Poland's general government deficit reached around 6.9% of GDP in 2025 - larger than during the COVID-19 pandemic peak - driven by surging defence spending, social transfers, public-sector wages, and healthcare costs. Public debt is projected to rise from 55% of GDP in 2024 to nearly 70% by 2027. Economists warn that without credible fiscal consolidation, Poland risks breaching its own constitutional 60% debt ceiling by the end of the decade. The European Commission has Poland under an excessive deficit procedure, and rating agencies are expected to grow more critical. Source, Source
Construction and logistics sectors keep hiring despite broad market slowdown
Poland's construction and logistics sectors continue to grow headcount in Q1 2026, bucking a broader corporate employment contraction that has lasted nearly two years. Both industries rely heavily on foreign workers - over 225,000 people in warehousing alone hold non-Polish citizenship. The government abolished the Labor Market Test for most work permit categories in March 2026 to speed up recruitment. Structural shortages are projected to deepen, with analysts estimating over 800,000 unfilled positions across the economy. Source

The multi-operator system - unique in Europe - runs at 52,000 collection points, with 78% of returns processed through reverse vending machines. Poland cited falling infection rates and the financial strain of the Ukraine refugee crisis. The court rejected force majeure arguments. Romania was simultaneously ordered to pay 600 million EUR.
