Number of Poles living abroad falls by 191,000 in seven years as return migration accelerates
A new Warsaw Enterprise Institute report finds the number of Poles living abroad for at least twelve months fell by around 191,000, or 11%, between 2017 and 2024, to about 1.5 million, according to Statistics Poland data. For the first time since the UK and Germany became major destinations for Polish workers, migration from Poland to Germany turned negative in 2024, while Polish departures from the UK have far outpaced arrivals since Brexit.
The report points to Poland's economic convergence with Western Europe, slower growth and rising living costs in Germany, and personal factors such as ageing parents and a desire to raise children at home as the main drivers of return. Returnees skew towards the 25-45 age group and are disproportionately well-educated, particularly those coming back from the UK.
Poland hit by cyberattack compromising medical records of nearly 19 million patients
