Impact’25, Poznań. Photo by Weronika Gidel-Asunmaa - and waiting for https://www.nbforum.com/ in September!

GDP growth forecasts have been downgraded a bit during recent months, currently consensus is between 3,1-3,6% and more or less the same level for next year.

PMI indicator decreased to 50,2 from 50,7 in March. In Germany the reading was 48,8, up slightly from the previous month. No big changes here.

INFLATION has now reached lower 4% figures and is expected to drop below 4% during the summer.

REFERENCE RATE was finally lowered as expected. The National Bank of Poland cut the reference rate by 0,5% in their May meeting (ahead of presidential elections). This is seen to be the beginning of rate cuts, and there is a possibility that the reference rate will be decreased to lower 4,X% by the end of the year - according to consensus by economists.

Despite the weakening dollar and other events, Polish Zloty has remained strong, and been trading around 4,25 level vs EURO. Many are expecting and hoping for weaker Zloty, but the currency has proven to be strong.

SALARIES growth again over 9%. The surprise in these figures came from wage data - after a couple of months 7,X% salary increases on y/y level, in April the increase jumped again, reaching 9,3%. This is slightly alarming when it comes to inflation predictions etc., but on the other hand we can see now a fast increase in the purchasing power - as wages grow 5% faster than inflation. In 2024, disposable incomes by households grew 14,1%.

Other interesting economic indicator findings are a nice increase in retail sales (over 7%), relatively good performance in local stock markets and negative trade surplus due to weakening exports to Germany and growing imports, especially from China.

Definitely worth following is the governmental deficit, which is expected to be over 6% of GDP this year, after massive spendings especially in defense and healthcare. This might affect Poland's credit rating.

Private consumption is expected to rise 3,4% this year (PKO).

Recent trade data shows decline in exports to Germany and increasing China imports

Poland’s exports to Germany fell by 2.3% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2025 to EUR 23.7 bln, while imports declined by 0.3% to EUR 17.3 bln, according to Statistics Poland (GUS). Germany’s share in Polish exports decreased by 0.7 percentage points to 26.8%, and in imports by 1.2 points to 19.2%. The trade surplus stood at PLN 26.9 bln, compared to PLN 29.8 bln a year earlier.

Poland recorded export growth to the United States (9%), Slovakia (5%), Ukraine (2.8%), and Spain (1.2%). Imports increased especially from South Korea (35.3%), the United States (17.3%), and China (15.7%). Trade with Poland’s top ten partners accounted for 66.6% of total exports and 62.1% of total imports. The share of the United States in Polish exports rose to 3.6% from 3.2% a year earlier.

During Q1, exports were at the same level than last year (88,3bln€) but imports grew by 6,3% to 90,3 bln€, making the trade balance negative.

In the first quarter of 2025, imports of goods from China rose by 19% year-on-year to EUR 13.7 bln, giving China a 15.2% share in Poland's total imports, up from 13,5% in last year.

Poland among the EU’s top growers

In the first quarter of 2025, Poland’s economy grew by 3.2% YoY, second fastest speed in the EU, after Ireland (10.9%). Although slightly slower than in Q4 2024 (3.4%), the growth rate far exceeds the EU average (1.4%) and the eurozone average (1.2%). Germany, Hungary, Austria, and Slovenia recorded GDP declines.

Foreign workers makes 7% of all labor force

Poland still needs foreign workers, even though unemployment is low. By November 2024, 7% of all workers (latest data by GUS, new will come in August 2025) in Poland were from other countries, and Ukrainians remained the biggest group. The Ministry of Finance says a big drop in Ukrainian workers is unlikely, even if peace returns to Ukraine (although many surveys show that even up to 300-500k Ukrainians might return to their homeland). Since mid-2022, about one million Ukrainians have been registered with PESEL, and this number grew slightly in late 2024. Right now, people from 140+ countries work in Poland, and many still choose Warsaw.

Wages grew again over 9% y/y, new regulations in 2026

Wage growth accelerated again. In Q1 2025, the average monthly salary was about 10% more than a year earlier. Companies now hire based on skills, and new rules aim to make salaries fair. The results of the TRS 2025 survey will be published in August, but based on previous study with analysis of 900 companies - life sciences jobs pay 16% more than average.

Poland’s minimum wage is now 2.7 times higher than in 2015.

The new EU rules are expected to make payments clearer by 2026. Meanwhile, new job listing rules require employers to disclose salary ranges. Workers can also request pay details split by gender to fight wage inequality. Companies that hide wages or offer lower pay than advertised face fines of up to 7 thousand EUR.

Statistics how Poland used EU recovery funds

Latest data shows there were about 638 thousand agreements for 10.3 bln EUR. Grants were 37.7% used, and loans 1.7%. The funds have helped for example modernize 800 km of railways, remove 236 dangerous road spots, and expand internet access to 42 thousand homes. More money soon will go to green energy (e.g. wind farms, electric public transport, biomass energy), digitalization projects, housing, and childcare centers.

Population decline in Poland by 2030

According to Eurostat projections, Poland’s population will decrease from 37.6 million in 2024 to 36.8 million in 2030, with the downward trend expected to continue in the following decades.

Forum Biomasa in Poznan - May 2025 by Andrzej Wisniewski

Polish energy mix is changing

In April 2025, coal produced less than half of the country’s electricity - its lowest share ever. Coal power generation fell about 18% from March, while natural gas use increased. Renewables supplied 34.2% of electricity, with solar energy making 32.4% compared to April 2024. This shift marks Poland’s move toward clean energy, even as the government delays updates on energy policies. The country is relying more on solar and wind power, reducing coal dependency for the first time.

PSE’s investment plans reaching EUR 15 billion

Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) plans to spend EUR 14.92 bln on grid expansion by 2034. Other companies that manage smaller, local electricity networks (distribution operators) will also invest money to upgrade regional power infrastructure. Gas power plants are crucial for balancing renewable energy, but a generation gap may emerge after 2028 when coal subsidies end. Electricity prices may be unpredictable after that, but long-term contracts help stabilize the costs and ensure citizens with more trust. Small nuclear reactors (SMRs) could replace aging coal plants, reducing infrastructure costs. More on the recent investments, you can read at the PSE website news page here.

EDP is one of many renewable energy projects in Poland that are supporting clean energy evolution.

Are Chinese cheaper products a threat to the local solar companies?

Onde, a Polish renewable energy firm, has started focusing more on developing and then selling ready-to-build green energy projects, rather than holding on to them long-term. It successfully commercialized the 112 MW “Serby” photovoltaic project, one of the largest solar farms in Poland. The company aims to increase its renewable energy capacity to 2 GW by the end of 2025. At the same time, European clean tech firms fear the competition from Chinese companies, especially in solar panels, EV batteries, and wind turbines. Backed by state support and access to raw materials, China’s firms can offer lower prices, creating major pressure on European producers.

Finnlines celebrated one year of Poland - Sweden connection; growing in the Baltic sea

Finnlines has been operating the Sweden-Poland route for over a year now and the connection has gained a solid position in the market. This new connection expands Finnlines' range of services and network, while strengthening the security of supply between the Baltic Sea countries. In April 2024, Finnlines launched a new ro-pax connection between Malmö in Sweden and Świnoujście in Poland. Since then, the company has been providing daily departures in both directions and transporting various types of cargo, private passengers and professional drivers.

The terminal area in Świnoujście has been expanded to meet customer needs, and the passenger facilities in Malmö have been modernized to better meet the ever-increasing demand. Although the war in Ukraine limits the full potential of the connection between Poland and Scandinavia, the prospects are very promising. Finnlines is considering introducing an additional ship to this route as soon as market conditions allow.

In addition, there is of course also the Gdynia-Hanko route, a freight connection where Finnlines has been present since 1997. Finnlines has a plan to increase the frequency from the current 3 to 4-5 departures per week.

In cooperation with partners – terminal operators in Gdynia and Hanko, Finnlines is starting a pilot project on this service, which involves the use of automatic trestles for securing road trailers on board ships. This system, developed by Finnlines in the early 2000s, allows for faster work in ports while increasing safety during transport at sea. Finnlines is using this system successfully on other lines and hopes for a successful implementation on the Gdynia-Hanko line in the second half of this year.

At the beginning of May, the group placed an order for three new ro-pax (roll-on/roll-off Passenger) vessels designed for the Finland-Germany route. The vessels are part of a larger order from Grimaldi Group for nine new ro-pax vessels. The remaining six units will be deployed in the Mediterranean. The new vessels are 240 metres long, have a cargo capacity of 5,100 metres of cargo line and can accommodate 1,100 passengers. They are designed to be more energy efficient and meet the needs of passengers on longer voyages, providing greater comfort and facilities on board.

Inside air quality in Poland: better filters and maintenance needed

Indoor air quality in Poland is affected by pollutants from building materials and poor ventilation. Big cities like Warsaw, Krakow and others also have smog that gets trapped in houses when the windows are open. Many homes and offices contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), carbon dioxide (CO2), and particulate matter, which can cause health issues. Regulations on acceptable emission levels are still lacking, which makes it difficult to control indoor pollution. Environmental certifications like BREEAM and LEED help improve air standards by creating guidelines for filtration and pollution control. Better filters and periodical maintenance can help with cleaning and dehumidifying.

Polish truck protests at the border and road repairs: how to avoid

Polish truck drivers have started a border protest at the Dorohusk-Yagodyn crossing, limiting freight traffic to one truck per hour. The protest aims to restore transport permits for Ukrainian carriers, which were removed by the EU in 2022. Passenger cars, buses, and humanitarian aid trucks can pass without restrictions. The protest may last up to four months, affecting trade and logistics between Poland and Ukraine. At the same time, road repairs are causing long delays at several crossings: Krakivets-Korchova: Polish side is repaving roads until mid-June, reducing traffic flow. Shehyni-Medyka and Ustyluh-Zosin: Ukrainian side is fixing roads, leading to traffic jams. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes like Smilnytsia, Nyzhankovychi, Rava-Ruska, Hrushev, and Uhryniv to avoid congestion.
